Marathon Inspiration

Tomorrow is the one month countdown to my first marathon. Since I missed 6 weeks of crucial training, I have been a little down/nervous about it. This morning, I watched last night’s episode of the Biggest Loser. I was excited about this episode because every year it is a great motivation. It was the episode where the final four contestants run a marathon.

Every season I watch, I cry, I get inspired. BUT, this is the first season I have watched where I have been personally training for a marathon. I can say this really was the pick me up I needed today! My two favorite contestants, Patrick and Ada, are part of the final 4. Ada is awesome and so strong and competitive, and Patrick is a Mississippi boy from about an hour or so away from where I live. I have been rooting for those two the whole time!

A little background:

Patrick started the show at 400 pounds. He is 27 years old and married with two little boys.

Also, we have awesome Ada before at 278 pounds:

and now running the marathon:

Patrick finished the marathon in 5 hours and 45 minutes (approx) and Ada finished in 4 hours 39 minutes, smashing the female record for the Biggest Loser marathon. Frado, the 3rd contestant finished just after Patrick, and Elizabeth, the 4th contestant, who had only run a long distance of 8 miles before the race (a stupid move) finished in 7 hours and something.

It was so inspiring hearing their stories and seeing their progress, I thought, if they can go from their previous weights to current weights, which is still not where they want to be, all in 3 months, then I can do it too.

Yes, I know I am undertrained, and coming back from an injury, but my goals do not revolve around time. I just want to FINISH and HAVE FUN. It is such a great accomplishment in itself to run a marathon, even if your time isn’t what you wanted it to be. I need to stop being so hard on myself and realize I have come so far in this past year of distance running, and I should be proud of myself.

As a blogger it’s easy to get caught up in PR’s and what other bloggers are running. Yes, I may be slow, but I have PR’ed in all of my half marathons (4 of them) and now I am a month out from my first marathon, all within a year. I think that is definitely something to be proud of! So, as Biggest Loser says…What have YOU done today to make you feel proud?

(by the way…that IS the questions of the day!)

Be sure to watch the finale next Tuesday!

When I’m feeling down Biggest Loser always gives me the kick I need. It’s also nice having a husband who reminds me I’m competing against me and no my friends who run sub-8s. Totally hear you on the “hard not to get caught up in other runner’s PRs.”

My day isn’t over yet, but I’m planning on beating Sunday’s 5K PR this evening. Good luck with your training!

That is an inspiration! And Good luck on your first marathon!

I have a proud moment for today. Im still new to running (started in Oct) but today I completed one of my goals.. I ran 3 miles without taking a walking break.

I don’t watch Biggest Loser anymore because the product placements drive me nuts…but I have to admit that is truly inspiring. What a great thought to keep in your mind during your race.
I’m proud I ran outside in the cold even though I was dreading it and didn’t want to!

I missed the episode last night but my co-workers talked about it this morning! Sounds very inspiring! :0) I saw last year’s Marathon episode…I was on a treadmill at the gym training for my first Half Marathon! LOL My how far we’ve come and how fast time flies!! :0)

I’ve actually never watched The Biggest Loser, which is kind of surprising. I’m glad it gave you the boost you needed. Way to keep a positive attitude!

Today I ran on my lunch break…on a treadmill. I hate treadmills and only made it 2 miles before I ran out of time, but I did it!

You definitely have the right attitude for this marathon! I ran my first slightly injured and I wish I had taken the time to focus on having more fun and taking it all in! That is the most important part in my book! Good luck!

    It’s my favorite episode, too!!

Biggest Loser is driving me nuts, though. It’s like one giant two hour commercial. If they could get rid of the ridiculous product placements, it would only be an hour long each week!!

    Hi!

I found your blog on the DIS board website last month. I am a “new runner.” and find your site inspiring. I have to (finally) chime in because I LOVE the biggest loser because THEY are so inspiring!!! I really want Ada to make it in. But either way…I always tell myself if they can do it I can!

I too love watching the BL!! I like when they run the marathon, i know a lot of people hate it but who cares. NBC doesn’t do the best job in editing it, but whatevs. i’d rather ppl get healthy and run a marathon vs stay obese and die.
    i voted for Ada 10 times. :-)

WooHoo! I am also one month before my first full marathon (Jan 6). I have a half marathon to run tomorrow and I have a terrible blister on my baby toe that I can hardly walk through. Went to the pediatrist, who is also a runner, and he said “Don’t worry, the adrenilin of the moment will carry you away from the pain”. Well here’s hoping he’s right!

BTW — I also find the marathon episode of BL so inspiring. I cry everytime they cross the finish line, no matter what the time is.

Best of luck with your final month!

I went to my swimming class to learn this bleeping freestyle stroke properly. Actually staying in the pool for an entire hour made me feel a bit proud. 😉

I just watched the episode last night and have to say the marathon episode is becoming one of my favorites. The show does an amazing job inspiring and motivating all fitness levels. Training for a marathon is hard work and you had the courage to start and that strength will pull you through. Be confident in your ability and run Your own race. It is easy to get caught up the doubts but remember you are in an elite group and just enjoy the ride. Just like TBL you are an inspiration.

thank you so much for the kind words :) They mean a lot!
I love how not only the people on BL lose weight, but SO many people back home get inspired and do it to. I also love this seasons theme of pay it forward!

You know how I feel about the Biggest Loser so I won’t go there. But I am so glad you’re so inspired. And I know you can finish your marathon. But have fun at the same time? I’m not so sure! You’ll definitely feel very proud after and that’ll make all of the pain worth it :)

  15. 15

Woo-hoo for Patrick our Mississippi boy! I have rooting for him, and Ada too. Elizabeth kind of pissed me off with her out-right neglect of training for the BL marathon. I just thought it was…disrespectful in a way. She finished a full three hours after Ada. I am being mean, but I think she could have and should have tried harder. *Anyway* can’t wait for the finale!

I agree. She totally annoys me b/c she acts like a baby and everyone has to take care of her. I don’t thinks he deserved final 4. she was in the bottom 2 eight times!! Yeah when I heard she only ran 8 miles distance wise before the marathon I was angry!

Good luck on the marathon! Today I am proud that I decided NOT to run becuase my achilles was still hurting. I would have made it worse, so I’m glad that I swallowed my pride and ellipticalled instead
