Listen up, Race Directors

Good afternoon! I hope everyone is having a fabulous day. We are dealing with some not so fun family issues, but other than that it’s been an ok day. I went for my first post-race run this morning by myself. I just did 3 miles, and my calves were SO TIGHT until almost the end of the run. But, all things considered, I had a good run and pushed hard. (More on that tomorrow hopefully!) In case you missed my race recap, you can check it out HERE.

Anyway, I have a qualm. With races. Specifically with race shirts. WHY do most races NOT have gender specific shirts? I am not a tiny person, but I am not a big person. I wear a size small t-shirt. But, in these race tech shirts, a universal small is BIG and NOT very fun to run in. Case in point, here is my ace shirt from this past weekend. I ran in it this morning, and it just so happened to match my headband and running skirt, score! But…it’s huge! (I am holding it out for the purposes of this picture, I am not filling up all that space with my body!) it took me a couple tries. The first one you couldn’t really see well, (me and the self timer don’t get along)

ok here we go, this one is better.

It is so baggy, it’s frustrating and felt heavy and awkward to run in it. Oh well!

I do have good news though, my GU came in the mail! GU was having a special I posted about on my facebook fan page (you can join on the right sidebar) where if you bought any GU product, you got a 6 pack of the new, limited edition flavor, island nectar. I can’t wait to try it out!

I ordered the vanilla gingerbread with mine, yum! Look at the cute little package!

On the moving front, we cleaned up and boxed up the entire guest bedroom yesterday and put it in the garage, except for furniture. Look what I found! Bwahaha!

IT’S HUGE! It’s actually bigger than this, you can see the left panel isn’t out all the way…it wouldn’t fit on the floor of the office! Ok, story behind the Notebook poster…Back in college I was the cool 19 year old who had her own apartment Smile Bobby and I had a friend who worked at blockbuster. They were taking this huge poster down from the window display and said I could have it SCORE! I promptly hung it up in my bedroom over my bed. Seriously? I really did that? Hilarious! It was definitely time to throw it away!

I have more pictures to post but will save them for another post. I have to go! Have a great afternoon!

QOTD: What is something funny you did in college you look back on now and laugh about?

OMG! Unisex tech shirts drive me nuts too! Is it totally sad that I get really excited when a race has women’s shirts?? Of course, I don’t even bother to run in race shirts, though, because they have sleeves. Lol

I got the free island nectar GU too! I just tried it today. Kind of pineapple-y and salty. I am unsure about it but think it will be ok during a run. I got jet blackberry with mine. Not so crazy about the vanilla gingerbread. Lol.

QOTD. I was a dork in college despite being in a sorority.

I only run in sleeved shirts in the fall/winter. ont know why i thought today was suppsoed to be cool outside..I was very wrong! Island nectar sounds interesting. I am going to try it on my next LR!

ugh, i’ve been racing for 13 years and have like 3 tech shirts that actually fit me! it’s very frustrating. I have no problem talking to race directors about it, my argument is that women pay the same as the men, we work as hard as the men and train just as hard, so why do men get a nice shirt they can proudly wear to the gym etc and i get another night shirt? It’s not fair. If they’re gonna be cheap about it then so am I, knock $ off the registration fee and let me have the option of not getting a shirt or get shirts for everyone. I know i know, it’s really not a gender issue, a larger shirt is simply more accessible for everyone since runners are such big people, ya know? 😛

    but Disney tech-shirts fit! :-)

wow thats crazy. 13 years! exactly. we do just as much work so why cant we get a cute shirt that fits? It’s not fair! I THINK the one I am running at the end of the month has gender specific shirts!

    Kimberly says:

I so agree about the shirts! Or at least have an X-small (or smaller) option. I just did the Disney Wine and Dine half and got a small shirt and it’s HUGE! I’m glad I bought a shirt at the expo because all the technical shirt will be good for is sleeping in.

yeah i got shirts at the Disney expo last year too b/c the race shirt was long sleeved. I live in MS and its hardly EVER cold so a long sleeve shirt does me not so much good. my husband cut the sleeves off his and made it a cut sleeve workout shirt!

I can’t figure out the whole t-shirt thing either. How hard is it for race directors to pick out a different shirt for women? I have actually gotten lucky this year at a couple of races with form fitting, specially designed shirts for gals. But for the most part, they fall off me and I never end up wearing them.

    Jen says:

I’ve done a couple races where I got a women’s tech shirt! But I agree, it can be tricky to know what size to order. Then again, I really only like running in tank tops or long sleeves so I just wear race shirts around the house.

    Laura says:

I hate tech shirts for this reason!!! They never seem to fit me right. But I just dont really like them anyways even when they do fit me, they always are too tight around the neck and choke me, or make me hotter than a regular tshirt and are just plain uncomfortable! I’d rather a regular shirt long sleeve or tshirt any day!

The Wine & Dine one we just got is HUGE on me, like looks ridiculous!

    Keri says:

Oh my gosh, completely agree with the gender specific shirts. It feels like such a waste because I rarely wear them but I refuse to get rid of them because of the nostalgia! Sometimes I just order a large and give it to my dad or boyfriend…

    Becky says:

My race shirts make great pajamas and dog walking apparel…but never good for running! I wish they could switch things up a bit sometimes. Maybe a race hat?

    Karen says:

    The GU looks yummy!!! :0)

I wore my Half Marathon shirt today, too! I had to buy one at the Expo cause the one in the bag was HUGE! Disney has NO consistency in their shirt sizes! So annoying!!!

  10. 10

Sorry about your race shirt. You pay so much money to run a race, and you want a shirt that fits!!

I did so many dumb, dumb things in college. Where to start?

  11. 11

i get an XS at rock N roll events and they are still big! most have turned into p90x shirts (its nice to have the extra material to wipe the sweat off my face haha). 2) you are so cute! you’re face in both pictures is so adorable! 3) I got my island nectars from outside pr yesterday! cant wait to try it out! I wanted to open one and try it right away but that would not have been a good idea

    Christel says:

Hahahahaha….well…in University…I had my share of pretty ‘Ouch, did I do that?’ moments….;)

  13. 13

I hate big shirts! Big technical shirts are even worse…they just hang! Usually, I get a ponytail holder and cinch them up in the back…kind of crazy, but it works!

  14. 14
Courtney @ I CAN DO THIS says:

Oh yeah – you made me remember this one!

Do you remember ever seeing free postcards in the restrooms at bars? Usually they were movie ads or something.
My girlfriend and I took a ton of Melrose Place cards and made a wallpaper border around our room in the sorority house.

But that was 1996 and Melrose Place was very cool then :/

    • 14.1

LOL! I am a little young for melrose place, but I WAS obsessed with friends!!!
in jr. high I would take the centerfolds of celebs out of the tenny bopper mags and hang them on my wall!

  15. 15

Ugh, so true! I was SO excited to run the NYC 1/2 Marathon and proudly sport my T-shirt. The medium is HUGE and the small is like a weird, boxey belly shirt. NOT cute. Total bummer. Great post!

    Heather says:

I am SO with you on the running shirts! I have run almost 20 races and finally got my first gender specific shirt at my last race. I was so excited about it and put that in my race review on my blod. The race director saw my blog and was so excited that I liked it b/c that was something they really wanted to do. I wish more would do that! I hardly wear my race shirts. :( It did match great w/ your cute running skirt, though! :)

    I enjoy reading your blog!

[…] BWAHAHA! I wore another one of my big racing shirts on purpose..and of course had to pair it with a pink skirt to match my pink socks and hat!!! In case you missed the shirt discussion, you can check it out  HERE. […]

[…] We went through everything and put our numbers on our shirts and our timing chips on our shoes. One things I was most excited about, gender specific race shirts! […]
